Chapter Twelve

Lucifer

Maye had no idea what was going on. I left because I needed to think, and when I returned to the hotel to find her gone, I had become even angrier, which quickly turned to worry. What if someone had taken her? I was confused over the panic that consumed me. I didn’t even worry this much about my girls. Then again, I didn’t know much about Maye’s powers just yet. Things were unknown with her. I was concerned like a lover would be, and I didn’t like it one bit.

What happened between us in the bedroom was unusual. Were those… Were those feelings? The overwhelming desire to make her happy and show how much she meant to me? The need to be close to her and never let her go? I didn’t even want to think about that. The only feeling I’d ever experienced before was anger, and it was far from that. I didn’t know how to love, not after what happened with my first. I had learned to keep a wall up for so long, I felt that it wasn’t worth getting close to anyone. Just thinking about it was enough to have me getting angry all over again. It was why Aden and I disagreed more often than not. He could prevent certain things, yet didn’t.

Frowning, I hurried on, wondering why in the hell we were walking, especially since she wore those heels. They completely turned me on. I would usually be okay with it, drag her into an alley and do what I wanted, but after I felt the walls around my heart start to crumble, I knew I was in trouble. I had to stay away, but dammit! She wouldn’t stop pushing my buttons!

Pulling out my phone, I started to dial a taxi. I’d normally just use my powers, but I didn’t want to zap her around the city. Every time I did, she seemed disoriented for a minute, and I needed her head clear.

Dialing Blake’s number instead, I explained that we needed a way to get around the city. She grunted in understanding, then told me Eli would deliver a car.

We stood there silently, watching people Maye yawned several times, rolling her eyes as I played on my phone. After hearing her sigh for the tenth time, I reached into my pocket and handed her the phone I took from her, watching as she read the news and texted somebody, probably Parker. I seriously hoped she did not inform him of her whereabouts, but I had a feeling she was smarter than that.

When Eli pulled up twenty minutes later, he climbed out of the car, a knowing smile on his face. Blake and her big mouth.

I narrowed my eyes at him. “Tell Blake gossiping is bad for her health. You both need to be a better example to that baby.”

Laughing, Eli shook his head. “She just wants to give you a taste of your own medicine.” He winked at Maye, whose brow was furrowed, confused over the whole exchange.
